Titanium rod production, processing and application
(1) Rolling
Rolling is a pressure processing method where the titanium metal billet passes through the gap (die) between two rotating rolls, with the cross-sectional area decreasing and the length increasing under the compression of the rolls. Rolling is the most common and efficient method for producing titanium rods, plates, and profiles. Depending on the processing temperature, it can be classified as hot rolling (performed above the recrystallization temperature) or cold rolling (performed below the recrystallization temperature). Hot rolling is mainly used for roughing and rough processing, while cold rolling is used to produce finished rods with high dimensional accuracy and good surface quality.
(2) Forging
Forging is a processing method that uses the reciprocating impact force of a forging hammer or the pressure of a hydraulic press to cause plastic deformation of the titanium billet, to obtain the desired shape and size. Forging is divided into free forging and die forging. Free forging is flexible and suitable for single-piece and small-batch production as well as the roughing of large titanium rods; die forging is suitable for large-scale production of complex-shaped titanium forgings. Forging can refine grains, improve the uniformity of the structure, and is an important process for producing large-sized titanium rods and rods used in aerospace structural components.
(3) Drawing
Drawing is a cold processing method where the already rolled or extruded titanium rod billet is forcibly pulled through a gradually narrowing mold hole, causing the cross-section to decrease and the length to increase. This process enables the production of fine-diameter rods with high dimensional accuracy and a smooth surface. It is commonly used in the manufacture of precision polished rods, wire, etc. During the drawing process, the metal grain size becomes finer, the strength increases, but the plasticity decreases. Intermediate annealing is usually required to restore the plasticity.
(4) Extrusion
Extrusion is a process where a titanium metal billet is placed in a closed extrusion cylinder, and pressure is applied at one end to force the metal to be extruded out through the mold hole, resulting in a product with a shape consistent with the mold hole. This method is particularly suitable for the production of titanium rods, profiles, and tubes with complex cross-sectional shapes. It is also commonly used for roughing processing of titanium alloys with poor plasticity. The extrusion process is in a triaxial compressive stress state, which is conducive to the exertion of the plasticity of titanium alloys and is an indispensable important method in titanium material processing.
Titanium alloys have a low density, high tensile strength and high specific strength. As a result, titanium rod products are widely used in medical, aerospace, chemical, and sports equipment industries. The diameters of titanium rods range from 4 millimeters to 100 millimeters. Customers usually customize according to their own needs.
The production of titanium rods is also very flexible. The factory can customize them according to different tolerance requirements of customers, such as H7, H8, H9, H11, etc.
The price of titanium rods is much higher than that of stainless steel, copper and other products. Titanium rods are also divided into bright rods and black skin rods based on their surface. The price of bright rods is slightly higher.
