Tent pegs, also known as ground nails or tent stakes,are, as the name suggests, primarily used to secure a tent to the ground. There are many kinds of ground nails of different materials and in different shapes to adapt to different grounds, including soft ground, hard soil, rock, sand, mud and snow, etc. as well as tents of different sizes.

Material

Plastic

As the cheapest ground nail, plastic pegs can be used when there are perfect camping conditions (moderate soil, sunny day). But having relatively large heads, they are more often used in car camping and large tents, not suitable for lightweight backpacks with small volume.

Steel

Steel tent pegs are common ground nails. They are cheap, durable, and have high strength. But considering their weight,steel pegs goes more with low-end tents, instead of being a lightweight choice.

Aluminum Alloy

Aluminum Alloy has lower strength than steel and titanium, but is lighter than the former and cheaper than the latter, Aluminum Alloy pegs are the most common outdoor nails. The main component of 6000 series aluminum alloy is aluminum magnesium silicon, of which 6061 aluminum alloy is the most widely used at present. 7000 series aluminum alloy is mainly composed of aluminum zinc magnesium copper, having high strength and being crack resistant, is the main aluminum alloy material in the aerospace and aviation field. In general, high-end brands usually use 7075 aviation aluminum, mid-range 7001, and low-grade 6061.

Titanium Alloy

Titanium Alloy is lighter than aluminum, harder than steel, and durable, which make it the most ideal lightweight nail material, but it is also the most expensive one. As long as you are affordable, choose titanium alloy nails.

Carbon Fiber

Carbon is lighter than titanium, but carbon fiber is hard and would rather break than bend. Carbon fiber nails are generally thicker and has better grip than titanium nails.

Carbon-Core

Carbon nails are light and easy to break, and a layer of aluminum or titanium outside can improve their breaking resistance. And of course, its process is more difficult and costs more.
